Suspect Shoots Kern County Deputy in the Hand During Gunfight

Bakersfield, California — On May 9, 2025, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Water Street for a report of a male subject armed with a hammer, a machete, and a firearm. Upon arrival deputies located a subject, later identified as 42-year-old Sadi Geovani Diaz, armed with a gun. Body-camera footage shows Diaz point his gun at a Deputy. A Deputy-involved shooting occurred. After being struck, Diaz still raised his gun and shot at a Deputy, striking him in the hand. Deputies also encountered a female victim who reported she had been shot by the suspect and was transported to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. Sadi Geovani Diaz was taken to the hospital for treatment of his injuries. Diaz was arrested and charged with attempted murder, burglary, kidnapping, kidnapping with a firearm, assault on a peace officer, and carrying a loaded firearm without registration. The deputy who sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hand was treated at the hospital and later released.
