Greenville County Deputy Shoots Man Armed With Hammer

Greenville, South Carolina — On September 28, 2025, around 12:49 p.m., the Greenville County Communication Center received a call from the property owner at 109 Steagall Circle regarding a subject trespassing on the vacant property. That subject was identified as 44year-old Johnny Ray Moore Jr. who had previously been placed on trespass notice from that property. The caller also informed dispatchers that the subject intended to make law enforcement kill him. At around 1:00 p.m., the first deputy arrived on the scene and met with the complainant who pointed to where Johnny was standing. Once contact was made, the deputy advised Johnny he was under arrest due to the fact he was trespassing after notice.

At that time, Johnny proceeded to run away from the deputy while simultaneously arming himself with a hammer. After a brief exchange of verbal commands, the deputy stated he observed Johnny raise the hammer in a position that he could throw the weapon at the deputy. As a result, the deputy fired at and struck the suspect. Following the shooting, the deputy waited for backup to arrive on scene before moving in to secure the suspect in handcuffs. Deputies provided medical aid until EMS arrived and transported the subject to the hospital. Despite first aid efforts, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased that same day at 2:43 p.m. Agents with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division were requested to the scene to conduct a third-p party investigation. The suspect's hammer was collected from the scene and seized as evidence.
