Officer Fires as 17-year-old Displays Gun During Pursuit

Santa Ana. California — On January 1st, 2026. At 5:35 p.m., Santa Ana Police gang detectives were patrolling the area of 1600 South Evergreen Street due to ongoing gang related criminal activities affecting the community. As detectives entered the parking lot adjacent to the east alley of 1600 South Evergreen Street, they observed a male in the parking lot. The male noticed the marked Santa police vehicle and immediately turned the opposite direction and began to flee. One of the detectives exited the passenger side of the police vehicle and was involved in a foot pursuit. His partner continued driving the police vehicle. During the foot pursuit, the detective identified himself as a police officer and ordered the male to stop. The male disobeyed the detective's commands. The detective then observed the male holding a gun in his right hand and repeatedly gave commands to drop the gun.

However, the male disobeyed the officer's commands and remained armed. The male suddenly turned in between two-part vehicles, lowered his body to the ground, and presented the gun at the detective. To deescalate the situation, the detective made several verbal commands to the male to drop the gun. Thereafter, an officer involved shooting occurred. It was determined that the male was not struck by gunfire. Shortly after the officer involved shooting, the detective's partner arrived and assisted in taking the suspect into custody during which a minor use of force occurred. Santa Police Dispatch was advised of the officer involved shooting and additional officers responded to assist. Orange County Fire Authority were also dispatched to the scene to administer medical aid to the suspect. The suspect was taken to an area hospital for medical care. A firearm recovered at the scene. The weapon was a 38 Smith and Wesson revolver. The suspect has been identified as a 17-year-old male who was subsequently booked at Juvenile Hall.
