Long Beach Officer Shoots Suspect After He Pulls a Gun Out of His Pocket

Long Beach, California — On April 17, 2024, at approximately 4:21 p.m., Long Beach Police officers were notified of a report of a person with a gun in MacArthur Park. Officers responded to the area and located a suspect matching the suspect description in the park, occupied by other residents. Officers contacted the suspect, at which time, they observed the suspect in possession of a firearm. Officers gave the suspect multiple orders to put down the firearm. The suspect did not comply which resulted in an officer-involved shooting. Officers rendered medical aid until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel. Fire personnel transported the suspect, identified as 46-year-old Donald Washington, to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Officers recovered a loaded firearm. No officers were injured. No other injuries were reported. Homicide detectives responded to the scene.
