Long Beach Officer Shoots Man Armed With BB Gun at Metro Station

Long Beach, California — On Aug. 7, 2024, at approximately 9:10 p.m., Long Beach Police Officers were dispatched to multiple reports of a man brandishing a firearm on the Metro Rail platform at West 5th Street and Pacific Avenue. Officers arrived and located the suspect. The suspect, 35-year-old Tyrell Harris immediately exited the platform and fled on foot. Officers went in foot pursuit, and, during the pursuit, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Officers rendered medical aid to Harris until being relieved by Long Beach Fire Department personnel.

Fire personnel transported the Harris to a local hospital where he was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his upper body. Harris was medically cleared and transported to the Long Beach City Jail for booking. Officers recovered a replica firearm later discovered to be an operable BB pistol with CO2 cartridge and BBs. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to further investigate the incident. Detectives discovered Harris pointed his weapon at multiple citizens on the platform and threatened to shoot them. Harris was charged with three counts of criminal threats, one count of assault with a deadly weapon. No officers were injured. No other injuries were reported.
