N.J. Cops and Neighbor Catch Child Jumping Out of Burning Home

Asbury Park, New Jersey — On Monday, August 25, 2025, at approximately 8:44am, Asbury Park Police Department (APPD) units were dispatched to 510 Prospect Avenue following a report of a working structure fire. Upon arrival, officers observed heavy smoke and flames coming from the residence. An 8-year-old juvenile emerged from a second-floor window, jumped, and was caught by Officer Dewitt Bacon, Officer John Walsh, and area resident Joseph Dunbar, who worked together to safely bring the child to the ground. The juvenile was immediately transferred to the Asbury Park Fire Department (APFD) and transported to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation and further evaluation. APFD personnel successfully extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Monmouth County Fire Marshals. In addition to APPD and APFD, Asbury Park Social Services and the American Red Cross responded to assist residents with immediate needs and housing placement.
