Suspect Throws Small Dog at Police Officer While Attempting Escape

Albuquerque, New Mexico — On May 5, 2025, Albuquerque Police Officer Aaron Stevens pulled over to check on a man later identified as 41-year-old Bobby Chavez, at the DK Gas Station on Carlisle Boulevard and Comanche Road Monday, when he saw him loitering under a “No Trespassing” sign. Chavez was holding a Yorkie in his arms. The officer told Chavez he was being detained for trespassing. As Chavez looked through his wallet for his ID, he threw the small dog he was holding at the officer, then ran away. As officers were chasing Chavez, police say he jumped a fence and ran into an apartment, and the female resident texted a neighbor that he would not let her leave.

Chavez got in through an unlocked screen door and told her he was running from the police. Police say he asked to use her phone, and when she tried to leave, he held her back and closed the door. Police were able to get Chavez out of the apartment and into handcuffs. He came out with his hands up after several commands. Chavez, who was already wanted on felony warrants for aggravated assault and drug-related offenses, now faces additional charges including false imprisonment, battery on a peace officer, and resisting arrest. The dog, which did not belong to Chavez, was recovered unharmed the following day by a concerned citizen and returned to its rightful owner. Authorities say an animal cruelty investigation is also underway.
