Houston Police Officer Shoots Wanted Man After Struggle

Houston, Texas — On January 11, 2026, Houston Police Officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic violation at the 248th Criminal District Court. The male driver, 24-year-old Sergio Almaza, did not produce a valid ID and was asked to step out the vehicle by officers. Officers were able to verify Almaza’s identity and learned he had outstanding warrants, including a felony. As officers attempted to take Almaza into custody, a struggle ensued. During the struggle, one officer discharged his taser. Almaza continued to resist after being tasered and an officer discharged his weapon striking Almaza. Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics transported Almaza to an area hospital in critical condition. Detectives consulted the Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Almaza was subsequently charged with aggravated assault against a public servant in the 248th Criminal District Court. Almaza remains hospitalized.
