Suspect Lunges at Reno Officers With Tow Chain Before Being Shot

Reno, Nevada — On February 3, 2026, just before 4 p.m., Officers were originally dispatched after several callers reported concern about a man lingering on the bridge, prompting what authorities described as a welfare check. When officers arrived, they encountered 27-year-old Michael J. Johnson in the roadway. Police shut down southbound traffic as they attempted to speak with him and requested assistance from a Mobile Outreach Safety Team, hoping to resolve the situation without force. For more than 15 minutes, officers tried to persuade Johnson to move to a safer location and accept help.

According to police, tensions escalated as Johnson walked toward the bottom of the bridge where additional officers were positioned. An officer advised colleagues that Johnson had previously been armed during an earlier encounter. Video shows officers repeatedly instructing him to drop a knife they believed he had, while Johnson warned them not to approach him from behind. Authorities say he suddenly advanced toward officers with his hands concealed before pulling a heavy metal chain from his jacket and rushing forward. Multiple officers fired their weapons, striking Johnson. Officers immediately began providing medical aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. One officer was also hit by gunfire during the exchange and later treated and released. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is conducting the investigation, which is standard practice in officer-involved shootings.
