Suspect Hits NYPD Officer With Car While Fleeing Traffic Stop

Brooklyn, N.Y. — On Friday, May 24, 2024, at approximately 12:43 a.m., Police Officer Pace and his partner, Police Officer Abid Azam, conducted a vehicle stop of a 2013 Toyota Highlander for a defective rear brake light at the intersection of Hegeman Avenue and Van Siclen Avenue, Brooklyn. The vehicle was being driven by 25-year-old Eric Jerrick. After a brief conversation, Police Officer Pace requested that Jerrick exit the vehicle.

Jerrick then accelerated the vehicle through the intersection, fleeing eastbound on Hegeman Avenue. As Jerrick fled, he struck Police Officer Azam with the front of the vehicle. As a result, Police Officer Pace discharged three shots from his service firearm at Jerrick's vehicle. Jerrick was apprehended on May 28, 2024. For his actions, Jerrick was arrested and charged with Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree (police officer), Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and related charges.
