Woman Gets Ticket For Holding Phone With Hand She Does Not Have

Lake Worth Beach, Florida — On February 11, 2026, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies were monitoring drivers along North Dixie Highway for possible cellphone-related violations when one deputy claimed he saw 36-yar-old Kathleen “Katie” Thomas driving while holding and manipulating a cellphone in her right hand. Based on what he believed he observed, the deputy initiated a traffic stop and approached Thomas’ vehicle. Almost immediately after the deputy explained the reason for the stop, the encounter took an unexpected turn. The deputy told Thomas he had seen her using a phone with her right hand, but Thomas responded by lifting her right arm and pointing out that she was born without a right hand. Despite realizing the contradiction, the deputy continued questioning her about whether she had been holding a phone and asked her multiple times to swear she was not using one while driving.

Thomas denied the accusation throughout the stop, but the deputy still issued her a $116 citation for violating Florida’s wireless communications law. After the stop, Thomas requested the body camera footage and later posted clips of the encounter on TikTok and Instagram. The videos quickly went viral, drawing millions of views and widespread criticism of the deputy’s handling of the situation. Many viewers questioned why the deputy continued with the citation after Thomas showed she did not have a right hand, while others debated whether the alleged violation would have even been illegal under Florida law. As public attention grew, Thomas challenged the ticket in court and pleaded not guilty. A hearing was later scheduled, but before the case could proceed, the deputy requested that the citation be dismissed due to a lack of evidence. The court canceled the hearing, officially ending the case, though the viral traffic stop continued generating discussion online about police discretion, distracted-driving enforcement, and body camera transparency.
