Tucson, Arizona — On April 4, 2026, the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team was activated at approximately 8:00 p.m. for a Tucson Police Department critical incident death investigation in the 1000 block of West Miracle Mile. Prior to this incident, at approximately 7 p.m., two Tucson Police officers were approached by an adult male while on an unrelated call for service in the 4000 block of North Oracle Road. During the interaction, the male made several unusual statements to the officers. However, none were criminal in nature. The male then left the area on foot. Moments later, the same male called 911 to report that he was being followed and threatened and was now near the 3300 block of North Oracle Road. Given the nature of the concerns reported, the call was dispatched as a welfare check. A patrol officer responded and made contact with the caller, later identified as 40-year-old Jesus Tapia. Tapia briefly spoke with the officer and did not request further assistance. He then continued walking west toward Miracle Mile. The officer cleared the area and returned to patrol, but was soon flagged down by a passing motorist, reporting that someone was throwing rocks at vehicles.
That officer responded to the 800 block of West Miracle Mile where he encountered the male throwing rocks. The officer recognized Tapia and requested additional officers to assist. Upon officer's arrival, Tapia produced a box cutter and attempted to evade officers. Officers repeatedly ordered him to stop throwing rocks and to drop the box cutter, but he did not comply. Neither the taser deployment nor the pepper ball deployment was effective. Tapia then continued to run west on Miracle Mile away from officers. Tapia continued fleeing from officers toward an occupied business while still armed with a box cutter. Recognizing the potential threat to the business and its occupants, officers repositioned to prevent him from entering the store and closed vehicle traffic on Miracle Mile. At approximately 7:15 p.m., a second officer deployed his taser, enabling officers to take the suspect into custody. Officers immediately rendered aid to Tapia for his injuries, including applying tourniquets to his arms to control the bleeding until personnel from the Tucson Fire Department arrived and continued life-saving measures. Despite these efforts, the suspect was pronounced deceased prior to arrival at the hospital. A TPD officer sustained minor abrasions to his hand during the incident. No other injuries were reported.
