NYPD Officers Shoot Man After He Points Pellet Gun

West Village, Manhattan — On Thursday, January 8, 2026, at approximately 10:51 p.m., NYPD Officer Geslline Gonzalez and Officer Christopher Rodriguez were on routine patrol in the confines of the 6th Precinct, when they were flagged down in front of 3 Bedford Street by a civilian who directed their attention towards a white BMW sedan that was stopped at that location. As the officers approached the white BMW on foot, 37-year-old Dmitriy Zass emerged from the driver's door in possession of a pellet pistol in his right hand, and pointed the weapon at Officer Gonzalez and Officer Rodriguez. Officer Gonzalez then discharged 14 rounds from her service firearm, and Officer Rodriguez discharged 12 rounds from his service firearm, striking Zass. Zass was taken into custody and transported via ambulance to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue where he was pronounced deceased. Further investigation revealed that Zass was involved in a vehicle collision with the civilian's vehicle at another location and fled the scene. The civilian followed Zass to 3 Bedford Street where Zass reversed his vehicle and again struck the civilian's vehicle. Zass' pellet pistol was recovered at the scene of the incident during this investigation.
