Colorado Springs Officer Shot After Masked Man Opens Fire

Colorado Springs, Colorado — On Monday, February 2, 2026, at about 1:30 p.m., a Colorado Springs Police Officer observed a male, later identified as 35-year-old Michael Foster, acting suspiciously in the area of East Bijou Street and Balfour Avenue. Foster had a mask concealing his face on a warm afternoon. When he saw police, he fled to a building where previous criminal activity was known to have occurred. At about 2:10 pm, two CSPD officers attempted to contact Foster, who still had the mask over his face, as he walked down the street. Foster ran as soon as he saw officers, refusing lawful commands to stop and get on the ground. Officers pursued Foster towards a nearby residence. After a short foot chase, Foster turned, pulled out a handgun, pointed it directly at Officer Dan Mork, and fired at least one shot, striking the officer. At about the same time, Officer One drew his duty weapon and fired at least one shot, striking Foster and disarming him in the process. Officer Steven Mibert arrived quickly behind Officer Mork and ordered Foster to remain on the ground or deadly force would be used against him. Foster again refused the lawful command to remain on the ground and attempted to flee from Officer Mibert.

Officer Mibert then attempted to gain control of Foster while giving him an additional command to get on the ground. At that time, Foster began reaching for Officer Mibert’s firearm. Officer Mibert then fired several shots, striking Foster. At that time, backup officers arrived on the scene, took Foster into custody without further incident, and immediately began providing him medical treatment until emergency medical personnel arrived. At the same time, Officer Mibert began to render medical aid to Officer Mork. Foster and Officer Mork were both transported to a local hospital. Officers recovered a loaded handgun on the scene. The weapon is a Springfield Hellcat 9mm. Foster was determined to have serious, life-threatening injuries. He remains hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Foster was discovered to have outstanding, unrelated felony-level warrants. The weapon in his possession at the time of this incident was determined to be a stolen gun. In connection with this incident, he is being charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, first-degree assault on a peace officer, 2 counts of resisting arrest, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Officer Mork was determined to have a serious but non-life-threatening injury and was treated and released from the hospital. No other officers or community members were injured during this incident.
