Labour politician Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election with 55 per cent of the vote, defeating Reform UK by more than 9,000 votes.

The former Greater Manchester mayor’s return to Westminster opens the way for a possible leadership challenge to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, an unusual scenario within the same party.

Al Jazeera’s Frances Read reports from Ashton-in-Makerfield, England.
