Stockton Officer Opens Fire After Suspect Raises Axe

Stockton, California — On Monday, May 4, 2026, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Stockton Police officers responded to the 2000 block of Nevada Street after receiving a report of a suspicious male armed with an axe who was smashing the front door of an occupied residence. Two Stockton Police officers arrived on scene and determined that the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Moises Andrade, attempted to gain entry into the occupied residence and used an axe to cause substantial damage to the front door. Officers also received information indicating that Andrade may have been heading to another residence, where additional acts of violence were believed to be possible. Both officers continued their follow-up investigation and subsequently learned that Andrade was staying nearby at a residence in the 1200 block of Deep Cliff Way. At approximately 7:37 a.m., the officers proceeded to that location and approached on foot. After attempting to contact Andrade at the front door, the garage door partially opened, and they observed Andrade inside. The officers contacted Andrade and began talking to him. While officers were speaking with the Andrade, he retrieved an axe that was tied to his bike, inside the garage, and armed himself in front of the officers. One Officer drew his service weapon, and another officer drew his taser as a less-lethal option. Officers attempted to de-escalate by stepping back and giving direct verbal commands for Andrade to drop the axe. Andrade refused to obey those commands, took a pre-assaultive stance, and raised the axe in a threatening manner, in close proximity to the officers. In response, one officer fired his service weapon, striking Andrade. Officers immediately rendered medical aid to Andrade until CenCal Fire and EMS Authority and Stockton Fire personnel arrived and transported Andrade to an area hospital. Andrade was later pronounced deceased. No officers were injured during this incident.
