Pope Leo told Spain's Catholic bishops they must listen to survivors of sexual abuse by clergy and offer them reparations — his first direct reference during the trip to scandals that have shaken the local Church's credibility.
 
Juan Cuatrecasas, who leads a survivor group, urged the pontiff to "put his foot down" against what he said was the Spanish Church's attempts to clean up its image.
