Watch live coverage of a candlelight vigil in Taipei, commemorating the 37th anniversary of the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen crackdown.

Over seven weeks in 1989, student-led pro-democracy protests centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square became China’s greatest political upheaval since the end of the Cultural Revolution more than a decade earlier. Under then-leader Deng Xiaoping, the military was sent in to end the protest on the night of June 3-4.

Using live ammunition, soldiers forced their way through crowds that tried to block them from reaching the square. Hundreds and possibly thousands of people were killed, including dozens of soldiers.
