US-Iran peace deal ends hostilities, but questions over peace remain: Marwan Bishara

A new memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran may have brought an end to immediate hostilities, but major questions remain over whether it can deliver lasting peace.

Al Jazeera's senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says the agreement appears to be a broad framework rather than a detailed peace deal, allowing both sides to claim success while opening the door to further negotiations.

The deal is expected to focus on key issues including the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear programme, Lebanon and wider regional security.

While the agreement could reduce tensions and prevent a wider conflict, analysts caution that the difficult details still lie ahead and that a ceasefire does not necessarily guarantee long-term stability.

Both Washington and Tehran appear to have strong incentives to reach an agreement, but whether this diplomatic breakthrough leads to a lasting settlement remains uncertain.
