Scotland secured a hard-fought victory over Haiti in their opening World Cup match, ending a 28-year absence from the tournament.

The winning goal came from Aston Villa captain John McGinn, whose deflected shot in the first half proved to be the difference.

While players and fans acknowledged the performance was below par, the result was celebrated as a historic moment - Scotland's sixth World Cup win in nine tournaments and their first step toward progressing beyond the group stage for the first time ever.
