Thousands have taken to the streets in the capital Tirana and along the southern coast, calling for the project to be scrapped over concerns about its impact on a protected wetland — home to flamingos, seals, and sea turtle nesting sites.
 
The protests have been dubbed the Flamingo Revolution, as the stretch of coastline serves as a key migratory stop for the birds.
