In multicultural Toronto, World Cup loyalties stretch beyond Canada

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is coming to North America, and Canada — as a host nation — is fielding its own team for the first time in decades. Yet in Toronto, one of the world's most multicultural cities, where more than half of residents were born outside Canada, loyalties are rarely straightforward. From Croatian cultural centres to Italian neighbourhood cafés, many fans will be cheering for the countries their families came from — without abandoning Canada.

Syria pushes to close displacement camps as 6 million remain uprooted

Nearly six million Syrians remain displaced within their own country following almost 14 years of civil war, with around a quarter still living in camps. The Syrian government has set a deadline to close all displacement camps by the end of 2026, calling on aid agencies to redirect resources towards rebuilding shattered towns and villages. However, vast swathes of the country remain in ruins, with many of the most vulnerable — widows, the elderly, and those who lost everything — unable to return without financial support or habitable homes. The UN refugee agency estimates 1.6 million people have returned to Syria since the fall of the former regime, but nearly six million remain displaced.

At least one person has been killed and five others injured in a shooting incident near Kochav Yair, in central Israel, according to Israeli police and emergency services.
The attack took place at multiple locations close to the separation wall and the boundary with the occupied West Bank.
Israeli authorities say two suspects were shot and killed as security forces responded to the incident.
Residents in nearby areas, including routes toward Qalqilya, were told to remain indoors as searches continued.
Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim, reporting from Yitma near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, said Israeli forces had imposed movement restrictions and were conducting investigations across the area.
Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas, speaking from Tel Aviv, said the area sits along the Green Line and described it as a “seam zone” between Israel and the West Bank.
He added that tensions in the area reflect a wider cycle of violence and retaliatory fears on both sides.

World Cup 2026 set to face scorching temperatures in southern US

With just four days until the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicks off across the United States, Mexico and Canada, concerns are growing over the extreme heat facing players and fans at several host cities. Temperatures in southern US venues such as Dallas and Houston regularly exceed 40 degrees Celsius, with the heat index pushing conditions to around 50 degrees. Urban heat scientists warn that fan zones, stadium approaches and open-air venues pose serious health risks, particularly for those not acclimatised to such conditions. Some teams have already moved training sessions to the evening to avoid the most dangerous daytime heat.

Peru votes in tight presidential runoff amid political instability

Peruvians are heading to the polls in a tightly contested presidential runoff, with conservative Keiko Fujimori and leftist congressman Roberto Sanchez locked in a statistical tie. It is Fujimori's fourth presidential bid, running on a platform of law and order amid soaring homicide rates, while Sanchez has drawn support from backers of jailed former president Pedro Castillo. Both candidates reached the runoff with just 29 percent of the vote, with 71 percent of Peruvians saying they feel unrepresented. The winner will become the country's ninth president in a decade defined by political turmoil and repeated impeachments.

Al Jazeera's Mariana Sanchez reports from Lima, Peru.
Mexico ramps up security as the FIFA World Cup spotlight approaches

Mexico is deploying nearly 100,000 security personnel — police, army and private security — across its three World Cup host cities: Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Concentric security rings will surround hotels, airports and stadiums, backed by aerial surveillance and, in Monterrey, face-scanning robot dogs. Analysts note that cartel groups are unlikely to disrupt the tournament, as doing so would invite intensified law enforcement pressure. Protest movements, including striking teachers, may pose a greater challenge to authorities.
